NHL roundup: Ducks rally in overtime, end nine-game winless streak

Troy Terry had two goals, Rickard Rakell had a goal and two assists, Kevin Shattenkirk had a goal and an assist, and the visiting Anaheim Ducks rallied to beat the Colorado Avalanche 5-4 in overtime on Saturday night.

The Ducks trailed by two goals with more than six minutes remaining in regulation. Ryan Getzlaf scored the winner in overtime and Ryan Miller stopped 29 shots to help Anaheim end a nine-game winless streak (0-6-3).

Mikko Rantanen had two goals, Logan O’Connor and Brandon Saad also scored and Hunter Miska made 22 saves for the Avalanche.

Colorado was without Nathan MacKinnon for the second straight game with an upper-body injury, and J.T. Compher was a late scratch, also with an upper-body injury. Two of the Avalanche’s top defensemen, Cale Makar and Bowen Byram, were also out with upper-body injuries.

Kings 4, Blues 3 (OT)

Adrian Kempe tapped in Gabriel Vilardi’s crossing pass for the winning goal at 1:45 into overtime as Los Angeles rallied from an early three-goal deficit to defeat visiting St. Louis.

Vilardi rushed up the right side of the ice on a 2-on-1 and threaded a pass between the legs of Blues defenseman Torey Krug to Kempe, who drilled it into a wide-open net for his sixth goal of the season.

Anze Kopitar had two goals and an assist, Alex Iafallo had two assists and Matt Luff also scored a goal for Los Angeles. David Perron had a goal and an assist, and Nathan Walker and Ryan O’Reilly also scored goals for St. Louis, which had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Canadiens 7, Jets 1

Brendan Gallagher collected two goals and an assist and Tyler Toffoli had one of each to fuel host Montreal to a romp over Winnipeg.

Josh Anderson scored in his return from a three-game absence due to a lower-body injury and former Jet Joel Armia, Paul Byron and defenseman Jeff Petry also tallied for the Canadiens, who defeated Winnipeg for the first time in four meetings this season.

Mathieu Perreault scored a goal in his third consecutive contest for the Jets, who fell for just the second time in their last eight games.

Stars 5, Blue Jackets 0

Jason Dickinson and Joe Pavelski scored just over three minutes into the game and rookie Jake Oettinger needed only 21 saves to record his first career shutout, as Dallas snapped a four-game skid with a rout of visiting Columbus.

Roope Hintz had a goal with an assist while Miro Heiskanen and Radek Faksa also scored as Dallas won for just the second time in 12 games (2-7-3).

Joonas Korpisalo stopped 18 of 22 shots before being pulled with 10:43 left in the game for the Blue Jackets, who were trying for a season-high third straight victory, but got blanked for the second time in six games.

Oilers 3, Flames 2

Connor McDavid’s late goal broke a deadlock and capped a three-point game, leading host Edmonton to a victory over Calgary.

McDavid, the league’s leading scorer who was held without a point in the previous three games, scored when he drove down the left wing and ripped a shot off the far post with 3:45 remaining in regulation. Kailer Yamamoto netted one goal and one assist for the Oilers, who snapped a three-game skid with a comeback win.

It was the first game for the Flames after coach Geoff Ward was fired and replaced by Darryl Sutter (although due to protocols, Sutter wasn’t behind the bench and assistant coach Ryan Huska served as bench boss.

Islanders 5, Sabres 2

Mathew Barzal scored in spectacular fashion to ignite a four-goal, second period to lift host New York to a win over reeling Buffalo in Uniondale, N.Y.

Brock Nelson scored the go-ahead goal in the second while Cal Clutterbuck and defenseman Scott Mayfield also tallied in the period for the Islanders, who are 6-0-1 in their last seven games. Captain Anders Lee added a goal in the third. Semyon Varlamov made 20 saves to preserve the victory.

Defenseman Jacob Bryson scored his first NHL goal and Sam Reinhart also tallied for the Sabres, who have lost six straight (0-5-1) and are 2-9-1 since returning from a COVID-19 pause on Feb. 15. Goalie Carter Hutton recorded 24 saves.

Penguins 4, Flyers 3

Jared McCann swatted in a rebound of a Brandon Tanev shot at 10:41 of the third period to give Pittsburgh the win over visiting Philadelphia.

Evgeni Malkin had a goal and an assist, and Bryan Rust and Zach Aston-Reese also scored for Pittsburgh. Goaltender Tristan Jarry stopped 19 of 22 Philadelphia shots, as Pittsburgh took two of three straight games between the East Division rivals at PPG Paints Arena, improving to 9-2-0 at home.

Travis Konecny had a goal and assist, Kevin Hayes and Shayne Gostisbehere also scored, and Scott Laughton had two assists for the Flyers. Brian Elliott had 23 saves.

Panthers 6, Predators 2

Noel Acciari posted a hat trick with his first three goals of the season and Florida shook off a slow start in Nashville.

Playing on the fourth line, Acciari — who had back-to-back hat tricks in December 2019 — scored the third with 3:02 left in the game for the final margin. Aaron Ekblad and Frank Vatrano each netted a goal and an assist, and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for Florida, which improved to 8-1-1 on the road. Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky (8-2-2) stopped 28 of 30 shots.

Eeli Tolvanen and Viktor Arvidsson tallied for the Predators, and Pekka Rinne allowed six goals on 32 shots.

Rangers 6, Devils 3

Adam Fox, Ryan Strome and Kevin Rooney scored in the first period as visiting New York defeated New Jersey.

Fox and Strome scored in the opening 7:15 while Rooney scored late in the first after the Devils tied it by goals from P.K. Subban and Mikhail Maltsev.

Subban, Maltsev and Nathan Bastian scored for the Devils, who are getting outscored 37-16 during their home losing streak.

Canucks 4, Maple Leafs 2

Vancouver scored twice within 42 seconds of the third period to take the lead and went on to defeat visiting Toronto.

Bo Horvat tied the game at 8:49 of the third period when he deflected Brock Boeser’s shot from the point on a power play for his 11th goal of the season. J.T. Miller then scored his seventh goal of the season on the rebound after a shot by Boeser was deflected by Toronto defenseman Morgan Rielly at 9:31.

Boeser and Miller each had a goal and two assists for the Canucks, who swept the two-game set with the Maple Leafs. John Tavares and Jimmy Vesey scored for the Maple Leafs, who finished their road trip winning three of five games.

Coyotes 5, Wild 2

Conor Garland scored the go-ahead goal to go along with an assist as Arizona rallied for a three-goal victory over Minnesota at Glendale, Ariz.

Tyler Pitlick scored a pair of third-period goals to seal the victory, including one into an empty net, while Lawson Crouse and Jakob Chychrun added a goal each. Derick Brassard, Niklas Hjalmarsson and Clayton Keller each had two assists for the Coyotes.

Matt Dumba and Jordan Greenway each scored once for the Wild, who held a 2-0 lead after the first period. Coyotes goalie Darcy Kuemper made his first start in 12 days and turned away 32 shots for the win. Cam Talbot made 26 saves on 30 shots in the Wild net.
