After Monday’s historically poor playoff performance by starting kicker Brett Maher, the Dallas Cowboys added Tristan Vizcaino to their practise squad.
In the Cowboys’ lopsided 31-14 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card stage of the playoffs, Maher missed an NFL-record four extra point tries.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the 33-year-old became the first player in an NFL game since 1932 to miss 4 additional marks in a regular-season or playoff game, a stretch of 16,207 games.
Although the management emphasised its faith in Maher before Dallas’ game against by the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, the team added Vizcaino to the practise squad on Wednesday as insurance.
I believe the most important thing is to ensure you have a solid strategy with Brett going ahead. Just ensure he’s prepared, Mike McCarthy, the Cowboys’ head coach, said following the victory.
NFL regulations let teams to add two players from the practise squad to the 53-man roster on game day.
Maher had a career-best year, making 50 of 53 extra-point tries and converting 90.6% of his field goal attempts. Before Monday’s playoff game, he had made 81% of his field goals and 95.5% of his extra points throughout his career.
Maher had the yips, according to Dallas’ special teams coordinator John Fassel, on Monday.
According to ESPN, Fassel stated on Tuesday, And you marvel occasionally how you come into the yips, and you marvel sometimes how you get back into the hot hand. I believe the key is to keep approaching the line and firing that object. On Monday, we missed a few free shots.
His hand was heated. He only missed [6] field goals the entire season, let’s face it. The yips occur, thus I anticipate a strong hand to be dealt.
In his seventh NFL season, Vizcaino has appeared in three games for both the New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals. In Arizona’s Week 10 victory over the Los Angeles Rams, he made all five of his tries (two field goals and three extra points).
91.7% of his field goals and 75% of his extra points have been made by the 26-year-old.
Vizcaino has been added to Dallas’ practise squad and will now be paid in accordance with the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement a weekly salary of $11,500.
